About Suibukan Tsunami Open Martial Arts Tournament

The Suibukan is an event sanctioned by the American Karate Association AAA. It takes place in Clarksburg, WV, USA, with the Nathan Goff Armory as the venue. Event directors and promoters include Brian Greynolds and Jenica Greynolds. The tournament features a tiered registration process with early bird, regular, and late registration phases.

Yamashita Karate Suibukan has a rich history and is deeply rooted in the teachings and legacy of Tadashi Yamashita, a renowned martial arts master. Suibukan of Indiana, founded by Tadashi Yamashita and James Ninios in the mid-1960s, stands as one of, if not the oldest, continuously operating dojos in the United States. Tadashi Yamashita is celebrated for his mastery in karate, weapons, and his personal style, Suikendo, which is characterized by dynamic and flowing movements, much like the waves crashing on the shore.

Tadashi Yamashita, born in Japan in 1942, moved to Okinawa at a young age, where he began his martial arts training. He has achieved the rank of 10th degree black belt in Okinawa Shorin-ryu Karatedo and Zen Okinawa Kobudo, making him one of the most recognized instructors internationally. In addition to his martial arts expertise, Yamashita has also had a successful film career, featuring in more than 25 movies, and has been influential in spreading the traditional values of Okinawa’s Karate worldwide through his teaching and seminars (Suibukan).

The Suibukan dojo operates under the guidance of Yamashita, with a focus on teaching according to the traditional values of Okinawan Karate. The dojo boasts a lineage of instructors who have contributed to its reputation as a center of martial arts excellence. Notably, Kyoshi Jerry Wroblewski, who ran the Midwest Karate Academy from 1977 to 2016, and Kyoshi Teru Hendry, who specializes in Kobudo, have been instrumental in the dojo’s success and continuity.

For anyone interested in learning traditional Okinawan Karate under the Yamashita Karate Suibukan lineage, these dojos offer a rich history and a direct connection to the teachings of Tadashi Yamashita, ensuring that students receive instruction grounded in the authentic practices and principles of Okinawan martial arts.

Suibukan of West Virginia, founded by Renshi Brian Greynolds and Shihan Jenica Greynolds in 2020, is dedicated to training students in Yamashita Shorin-Ryu, Kobudo, and Suikendo throughout West Virginia. Starting their teaching journey from their basement, they later moved to a larger facility to accommodate more students, located inside Rival Fitness in Clarksburg, West Virginia. This dojo is part of a broader martial arts community that values dedication, passion, and the continuous pursuit of learning under the guidance of renowned masters such as Hanshi Tadashi Yamashita and Hanshi Hayes (Suibukan of West Vir).

The lineage of Suibukan of West Virginia is deeply rooted in the rich history of Okinawan karate-do, tracing back to significant figures like Choshin Chibana, who was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th Class, by the Emperor of Japan. It also acknowledges the contributions of Shugoro Nakazato and Tadashi Yamashita, both of whom have played pivotal roles in the development and dissemination of Shorin-Ryu karate-do globally. Nakazato’s dedication to teaching and perfecting Shorin-Ryu Karate-do, as well as Yamashita’s influence as a leading karate and kobudo expert in the United States, underscore the dojo’s connection to traditional Okinawan martial arts practices (Suibukan of West Vir).
